Midland Messages:
August 14, 2024
Welcome to Midland 2024-25!
Dear Midland Families,
We are gearing up to welcome you to the 2024-2025 school year at NEU Midland Elementary!
We have been preparing for a great start to the new school year, and we anticipate an exciting year ahead. We are pleased to ensure high quality instruction in a No Excuses University (NEU) culture. College and future readiness has a big presence on our campus throughout all aspects of our school day. As is evident throughout the school and our “No Excuses” motto allows us to encourage high standards in academics and behavior.
At Midland, we teach values through the Character Counts! program and we approach our behavior systems through restorative practices and Positive Behavior Support (PBS). We believe all children will learn with good character through our school-wide expectations of being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, and SAFE. We are also excited to be a No Place For Hate school which means we believe our differences make us unique and we learn about positive ways to spread kindness and compassion throughout the year.
Campus security and safety for students and staff is a high priority. We have been working diligently in preparing our campus for your return. In our effort to ensure the highest degree of safety for our students and staff, we are thankful for your cooperation with the following procedures:
-
Breakfast and Lunch is served daily and is available at no charge to all students. Breakfast gates open at 7:15 am Please arrive early to finish eating prior to the bell!
-
All students in grades 1-5 will be asked to enter campus from the playground gate near the lunch tables. Gates open to the supervised playground at 7:25 am.
-
TK and Kinder families will be able to access their classrooms from Gate A (closest to the admin building) If older siblings are assisting with a kinder drop off, they may also enter with their sibling at Gate A.
-
Parents are welcome to walk their child to their classroom on the first day only. Parents entering the campus will wait with their child at the teacher’s line area and may walk with the class to the room; however, parents may not enter the classroom.
-
All parent volunteers must complete a new volunteer packet for this school year. Volunteers in classrooms will be coordinated by the teacher and all volunteers must be processed by November 15, 2024 to participate in any classroom activities, including field trips.
-
Please do not park in the bus turnaround area–we are expecting buses to arrive!
-
Please only use the crosswalk to cross our parking lot. It is important you model safe behavior for your children.
-
Please follow all traffic laws and drop off only in the zone marked at the ESS building.
-
Dismissal will occur at several gates throughout campus:
-
Kindergarteners will exit from Gate A. Kindergarten dismissal is a “hand to hand” process, where kindergarteners will not be released until an approved adult meets the teacher at the gate. Please be patient as teachers learn which adult matches each child.
-
First grade will meet parents at Gate B (to the left of admin bldg).
-
Second through Fifth grade will dismiss from Gate C (large playground gate).
-
Here are some special dates to keep in mind:

1:30-2:30 pm: Midland Teachers and Staff will be available for a Staff Meet & Greet in our amphitheater. Come meet your teacher and mingle with our parent groups to kick off a great start to the year!

We appreciate your support with this big endeavor of a positive school opening and we hope this will put your mind at ease to know that your child is in a healthy, safe environment in which to learn.
Thank you for your positive support of our school and we look forward to an amazing school year!

8/15/24 Food & Nutrition
Dear Midland Families,
School meals continue to be free for all students, regardless of household income, under California’s Universal Meals Program. Every student enrolled in PUSD (PreK-12) is offered one free breakfast meal and one free lunch meal each school day. Meals must be recorded by specific student accounts, either by scanning their barcode or entering their ID number in a pin pad. Please note that a student cannot take just a beverage for free; they must select enough items to make a reimbursable meal.
Although meals are free for all students, our District is still required to process Applications for Free and Reduced-Price Meals. We encourage all households to apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or using a paper application. (Paper applications are available in the school office). Meal applications are very important because meal reimbursements are still based on individual student eligibility, and State funding for school sites is partially determined by free/reduced eligibility. Households that are income-eligible for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for other benefits such as: free or discounted after-school care, reduced home internet costs, discounts on standardized testing fees, and food-purchasing assistance during summer breaks.
In addition to complete school meals, some school sites offer a la carte snacks and beverages for purchase. PUSD Food and Nutrition is a cashless operation, so students must have money in their prepaid account or bring a check in order to buy a la carte items. To load funds on a cafeteria account, families can visit MySchoolBucks.com or send a check to school.
- To view interactive school menus, with nutrition facts and allergen information, visit MySchoolMenus.com, which is also accessible from the PUSD Food and Nutrition webpage.
- Simple, printer-friendly PDF menus are posted monthly on the PUSD Food and Nutrition webpage, under School Menus > Printable PDF Menus.
- Information about special dietary accommodations and the CDE form to request special meals can be found on the PUSD Food and Nutrition webpage, under Resources and Links > Special Dietary Needs.
8/15/24 Students with Medication
Important information for students with medication
- Medication should be turned in no later than August 20, 2024. Parents can turn in medication to the health office between 10 AM and 2:15 PM Monday through Friday.
- Medication authorization forms: If your student has more than one medication, only one authorization to administer form needs to be filled out with all medications listed.
- All medications need to be listed with their names, dosage, methods of administration, and the time of day they will be given (filled out by the physician).
- All forms must be filled out and signed by the student's physician. NO medication will be accepted or administered without a physician's and parent's signature and a fully filled-out medication form.
- Medication measuring cups or syringes must be provided with the medication. We do not have measuring cups or syringes here at school.
- No expired medication will be accepted.
- Only School-provided forms (attached) are accepted.
Important forms:
Medication authorization form
Anaphylaxis form
Asthma
Diabetes
Seizure medication orders
Sunscreen, cough drops, lip balm, Vaseline, etc., must have a note from the parent and will also be kept in the health office.
If you have any questions, please contact Valerie Hernandez-Bautista at (858) 748-0047 ext. 2108 [email protected] or email [email protected]

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Our Back to School Night is next week 8/29/24 from 5-7pm!
Grades TK-2 teachers will be presenting in classrooms from 5:00-5:45pm
PTA general meeting in the MPR from 5:45-6pm.
Grades 3-5 will be presenting in classrooms from 6:00-6:45pm.
This is an excellent time to connect with your child's teacher and gain information about the routines of the classroom and the school year. This is an adult event and we will have limited childcare available. If you require childcare, please fill out the form below. It will be very important to pick up your child at the end of your classroom presentation.
CLOSED CAMPUS
Midland is a closed campus school and we must keep our school secure at all times. This means that volunteers must sign in at the office to enter our campus. Many of you have visited our front office to find that we have a system at our doors where you must be buzzed into the school lobby to sign in or ask a question. The office is open during 2 sessions in the day, 7:30-8:00am and again 1:30-2:00pm. You must be let in by our staff at any other time of day due to the need to ensure all our entrances are locked with limited access to staff and students. This procedure will take some time to get accustomed to, but I am sure we all appreciate the additional layer of security to our campus during school hours.
NO RESCUE POLICY
We have a "No Rescue Policy" here at Midland, which means we teach responsibility in a nurturing environment through natural and logical consequences. If your child forgets something and you feel a need to bring it to our office, we will not call the classroom or take the item to your child. We do our best to not interrupt instruction as much as we possibly can, and deliveries for forgotten items cause unnecessary disruption. Please support your child by helping them make sure they have all their belongings for a successful day.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are loved here at Midland and all volunteers must be cleared annually to help us out. There are 2 levels of volunteerism and your teacher communicated which levels are required to meet their needs this year. ALL volunteers require updated documents, including Megan's Law, TB test, and Level 2 volunteers also required fingerprints if you will be working with children without direct teacher supervision. It is imperative that all our volunteers be processed no later than NOVEMBER 15, 2024. All the documents can be found online or in our office.
RATTLER ROCK ASSEMBLY
Next Friday, 8/29/24 we will have our first Rattler Rock assembly in our quad and it is open to our community, please check in at the front office to enter our campus if you wish to join us at 7:45am. We ask that all adults exit the campus immediately at the end of the assembly.
MISSION 2 $AVE
Midland Elementary is proud to partner with Mission Federal credit union in a special campaign called Mission 2 $ave, where students learn the importance of financial literacy by opening up a student savings account that earns 5%APR for accounts up to $500. Any student can participate in this program with as little as $1 to open an account. Starting 9/7/23, students will have the opportunity to make deposits into their account every Thursday morning.
RESTAURANT NIGHT: IN THE MIX
Our first Restaurant fundraising event is NEXT WEEK at In the Mix on Friday, Aug 30th from 11:00am-8:30pm! Present the attached flyer (or find it on social media at #TeamMidland next week) when you order, and 20% of your transaction will go to Midland Educational Foundation! Free/Reduced-Price Meal Applications Reminder
Please complete the free/reduced-price meal application! Although school meals are free for all students, the application for free and reduced-price meal eligibility is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. If income-eligible families do not apply, we risk losing important educational funds for our school.
Students who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on testing fees, before and after school care, and home internet! Income qualifications change annually, so a new application is needed every school year. For school year 2024-2025, children from a family of four are eligible if the total gross (pre-tax) household income is less than $4,810 per month, or less than $57,720 per year. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.
Safety Reminders:
With fire season upon us we want to assure parents and guardians that we have appropriate response systems in place when emergencies arise. Our first priority will always be the safety of our students and staff on campus.
When Midland becomes aware of any incidents in the geographic area of the school site, we will focus first on the safety of our campus while working with law enforcement, emergency responders, and the District for guidance and support for communication. Communication with parents is part of the response plan but will be secondary to immediate safety. As soon as we can, we will message families with details of school-wide incidents such as lockdowns or evacuations. Please ensure your contact information is up to date in ParentVue in the “My Account” section.
Finally, we have been asked by first responders to remind our families NOT to come to campus in times of emergency – there have been several instances when officers, firefighters, and their ability to respond to the emergency have been hindered by parents rushing to the scene. Should an emergency occur, we will send out messages about dismissal or reunification procedures for families when first responders indicate it is safe to do so.

If you need help with ordering, please contact Rose Prickett at 619-861-2180. This art program is sponsored by our Midland Educational Foundation (MEF). Thank you!
FUN RUN
We listened to your feedback! This year, we are planning our first-ever parent led fun run event/ fundraiser instead of our usual Apex run. The goal is to ultimately raise more money for the school and organizing the run ourselves means less overhead costs. With the budget issues that PUSD is facing, MEF hopes to help close any gaps by funding more services for Midland and the students. In addition to the other activities we routinely fund, we are funding one impact teacher for this school year, and we would love to raise enough to fund two impact teachers next year and provide increased support for our students and teachers.
We are currently organizing committees to take charge of individual activities associated with the run, including day-of volunteers, incentive planning, and more. Our fun run fundraising period is scheduled for April 1-11, 2025 with the run itself taking place on Friday, April 11.
If you are interested in helping, please take a moment to fill out this survey, and we will be in touch about next steps: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1jqUboQ_LYdWQ8RltYcJzItD1NBe2dMvmhKd7EALUdEM/viewform?ts=672982d5&edit_requested=true

Students will have the opportunity to make deposits into their account every Thursday morning.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are loved here at Midland and all volunteers must be cleared annually to help us out. There are 2 levels of volunteerism, and your teacher communicated which levels are required to meet their needs this year.

The SafetyNet:Smart Cyber Choices presentation covers the threats and prevention and is provided by the San Diego Police Foundation in collaboration with the San Diego Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Please RSVP by March 7. For questions, contact [email protected]

READING DIFFICULTIES RISK SCREENER UPDATE
What is the CA Reading Difficulties Risk Screener?
The CA Reading Difficulties Risk Screener (RDRS) is a tool that is used annually with all K-2 students to assess their early reading skills. The RDRS is used to identify students who may be at risk of reading difficulties and need additional support in reading and literacy to ensure success in school. The RDRS screening process will begin in the 2025-2026 school year.
Why is the RDRS important?
The screener helps identify reading difficulties in the primary grades, giving students the best chance to improve their reading skills. By identifying challenges early, teachers can offer targeted support and interventions that help all students become confident readers. Early identification and support lead to better outcomes in literacy and overall academic success.
How does the RDRS work?
The screener will be administered to students in the primary grades (Kindergarten through 2nd grade) through a series of short assessments focused on foundational reading skills. The results help teachers understand where a student may be struggling and whether further assessment or intervention is needed.
RDRS Community Input Meeting – 4/1 @ 5:00pm
Learning Support Services will be hosting a Community Input Meeting on April 1, 2025 from 5:00-5:45 pm. We invite parents and community members to join our Community Input Meeting to ensure all voices are heard in selecting new learning materials for our schools. Community feedback is essential in choosing resources that support student success, reflect our district’s values, and align with educational goals. This meeting will be held via Zoom, and can be accessed HERE.
For more information, please click here for an infographic explaining the RDRS selection process and timeline.

Attendance
Attendance in school is very important to Midland Elementary and in the month of March we have 171 students (28%) with perfect attendance.
Tardies
We want to remind everyone of the importance of being on time to school each day. School begins promptly at 7:45 a.m., and the first bell rings at 7:40 a.m. to give students enough time to line up and settle in for a successful day of learning.
To ensure students are ready to engage fully, we encourage them to arrive early enough to take advantage of breakfast, which is available starting at 7:15 a.m. This gives everyone the opportunity to fuel up before class begins. Arriving on time helps set a positive tone for the day, allowing students to focus, be present, and make the most of their education. We appreciate your support in helping us create a smooth and effective start to each day!

FALL 2025 ESS INTEREST APPLICATION
The Fall 2025 ESS Interest Application opened last week on Tuesday, April 22. It will remain open through Friday, June 6. All interested families may apply at any time during this initial application window. There is no advantage or disadvantage to applying earlier or later within this period, as all applications will be processed simultaneously.
Parents are encouraged to wait patiently until their child's enrollment has been completed by the school site and they have received access to their ParentVUE account before attempting to use the ESS Application Management System.
Families who apply during the initial application window will be notified on June 13 whether their student has been offered a placement in the ESS program for the 2025–26 school year or if their student has been placed on the waitlist.
If you have any questions about ESS enrollment, please email [email protected].
NEW STUDENT ENROLLMENT
Hello Midland families,
Please share this news with any new families you may know who may need to enroll their children in school.
Poway Unified School District is currently enrolling new students for the 2025-2026 school year!
PUSD Enrollment is an online process. Enrolment packets are digital and can be completed using any computer, tablet, or smartphone with an internet connection. You can contact your assigned school of residence to schedule an appointment if you do not have access to a device/internet or if you need assistance with completing the online enrollment packet. Please visit the PUSD Enrollment page for directions and access to the online enrollment portal.
Full-Day Universal TK in Poway Unified
PUSD is now offering a full-day Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program. TK is designed as the first year of a two-year kindergarten program and uses a play-based curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. EC Section 48000 [D]. Students who participate in TK will attend school daily for a full day, including a scheduled lunch and recess. Contact your neighborhood school for specific hours and details.
For the 2025-26 school year, TK enrollment is open to all eligible 4 year olds within the Poway Unified School District. This means, if your child's 4th birthday is on/before September 1, 2025 (born between September 2, 2020 and September 1, 2021), you are eligible to enroll your child in our full-day Transitional Kindergarten program! Click HERE to learn more about TK.
We can’t wait to meet all of our new students! School starts on Wednesday, August 13th, for the 2025-2026 school year.
